Alamo is
one of a few elementary schools in San Francisco that offers a strong
vocal music program. Through this program, students learn MUSICIANSHIP
with their voices. They learn about pitch, melody, rhythm, expression,
and composing. They also learn performance skills by participating
in special concerts for Alamo School and the community.
A
wonderful benefit of the music program is that students experience
the joy of singing together and sharing songs from many countries
and cultures.
The driving force that made this program such a success has been
through the dedicated music instruction of Kat
Sena. She has been part of the Alamo School instructional
staff since 1994. Her music background as a recording artist, composer
and choral director adds to the depth of instruction and has inspired
her students.
The Alamo Friendship Chorus was founded in 1996. It is open to
students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, with each member applying
and auditioning to join. Now over 100 students strong, the members
practice twice a week before school. The audition is not to "judge"
the student's voice, but to assess progress in pitch and projection.
Since the chorus is voluntary, it is important that students make
a commitment to the group.
In Kat's words
"It has been my great fortune to develop
my career on the rich foundation of working with young people. Through
music education, I try to share the wonder of being creative with
my students and help them find their own artistic voice."
It is easy to see why Alamo's Music Program and Friendship Chorus
are so special.
